When you’re deciding which forklifts to buy or hire from your plant machinery supplier, do you consider what type of fuel the forklift you choose runs on?
As you will no doubt be aware, there are many forklift models on the market, but did you know that there are three different fuels that forklifts can run on? They are:
- Diesel
- LPG
- Electric
They all have their benefits and some models will suit certain use cases and locations better than others. Let’s look at each in turn.
When are diesel forklifts a good choice?
Diesel forklifts have got a reputation for reliability. They are well-known in the construction sector for being able to handle rugged terrain and all kinds of weather conditions. That means if you’re looking for a forklift for outdoor use, these are often your best option.
They are also able to handle heavier loads than, for instance, electric forklifts. Plus, because they are diesel fuelled they can be refuelled quickly and easily onsite.
When are electric forklifts the best choice?
If you’re looking for a forklift for use in an indoor setting, such as a warehouse, an electric forklift is likely to be your preferred option. Among the main reasons are the lack of emissions and the fact that they are much quieter than their diesel counterparts.
Electric forklifts also tend to be more maneuverable, which makes them ideal for tight spaces like warehouse aisles. Plus, recharging an electric forklift is considerably cheaper than buying LPG or diesel fuel.
Savills named 2024 “The Year of the Warehouse”, highlighting how many new warehouses have been developed in the UK in recent years, which could also drive demand for electric forklifts.
When should I use an LPG forklift?
LPG forklifts are the most versatile of the forklifts available as they can be used in both indoor and outdoor settings. They produce lower emissions than diesel forklifts, making them suitable for indoor use.
They also deliver more consistent performance than an electric forklift throughout the day. This is because electric models can lose power as their battery drains, which won’t happen with an LPG model.
